International humanitarian programs help Taiwan firms contribute to overseas communities, strengthen the nation's medical brand image

Luu, a 5-year-old Vietnamese boy suffering from Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome, received treatment from an interdisciplinary medical team led by Chen Hung-chi, superintendent of the International Center at China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) March 2018 in central Taiwan’s Taichung City. The medical expenses were covered by Hong Fu Industrial Group (HF), a Taiwan company with long-term roots in Vietnam. Luu recovered well after undergoing two rounds of treatment consisting of four different surgeries. The International Center held a farewell party for Luu Oct. 4 to celebrate his recovery before he returned home.

Small, intimate farewell party was full of blessings and love, resembling a ‘mini UN’
 
HF employees, Chen’s medical team, volunteers and Let, a young girl from Myanmar who is seeking treatment at the hospital, attended the party. With its lively atmosphere, the party resembled a “mini U.N.” Chen and HF General Manager Wang Zhe-ren joined celebrations and attendees pasted stickers of national flags on their faces to give Luu a “world-class” send off. Luu was full of excitement and thoroughly enjoyed the food and festivities. Deeply moved by the gesture, Luu’s father expressed his gratitude to HF and said he will always remember everyone’s kindness and compassion.

HF sponsored Luu, a sufferer of Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome, to undergo treatment at CMUH in Taichung. At a farewell party, Luu was overjoyed to receive a present from the company’s general manager, Wang Zhe-ren.

HF General Manager Wang said that before Luu was admitted to hospital, he was often anxious and nervous. After his treatment, Wang noticed that Luu’s behavior had changed dramatically; he had become much more cheerful and lively. The company’s employees were glad to hear that Luu had been discharged and was happy and healthy. The collaborative effort demonstrates HF’s commitment to give back to the Vietnamese people, fulfill the social responsibility of an international corporation and help spread the compassion of Taiwan.
 
CMUH’s Chen expressed his gratitude to HF for its donation of nearly NT$7 million over the past three years to treat Luu and Loan, a little girl also from Vietnam, while serving as a good role model for other corporations. The support of the Taiwan enterprise and the hospital’s world-class experts and medical technology have given these two children second chances at life.
 
In his last operation, Luu was treated for hyperplasia and abnormalities in his lower left limb. He had reconstructive surgery, extensive tissue removal, skin grafts and scar contracture before undergoing rehabilitation to restore normal joint function and muscle strength. The hospital also taught Luu’s family how to properly take care of his wounds to help prevent infection and facilitate a faster recovery. Luu will return to the hospital for a follow-up exam next year.

Hong Fu Industrial Group (HF), a Taiwan company with long-term roots in Vietnam, donated around NT$7 million to cover the treatment costs for Loan and Luu, two Vietnamese children who suffer from Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome. Zhang Zhi-bang (left), the company’s vice chairman, visited the hospital in Taichung several times to offer his support and encouragement.

HF sets an example for others to follow, encouraging more Taiwan companies to engage in international medical aid
 
The medical cooperation between CMUH’s International Center and Hong Fu Industrial Group in the two Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome cases from Vietnam has helped the two children lead healthy lives again, while also setting an example for other firms to follow. This year, the center has started a cooperative project with Pou Chen Group to help Let, an 11-year-old girl from Myanmar with Goldenhar Syndrome. Collaborative programs between hospitals and local firms mean Taiwan’s humanitarian aid can reach even more people around the world.
