The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) welcomes and appreciates the resolution passed by the Executive Committee of the Association of State Democratic Committees (ASDC) at its winter meeting on February 13 to reaffirm the US commitment to Taiwan on the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act. The resolution highlighted the Democratic Party’s staunch support of Taiwan-US relations.

The resolution reiterated that the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances are the cornerstones of US policy with respect to Taiwan, adding that “the United States and Taiwan have forged ever closer economic and security relations over the last four decades based on their shared commitment to democracy, freedom, the rule of law and free market principles.” It further underscored that “the United States-Taiwan partnership is critical for the promotion of prosperity, democratic values and regional security throughout the Asia-Pacific region,” and that the ASDC supports “a robust US-Taiwan partnership through economic, security, and cultural ties.”

The ASDC is an important organization within the Democratic Party, comprising Chairs and Vice Chairs of State Parties. It has long maintained friendly and close relations with Taiwan, passing resolutions endorsing Taiwan's participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization in 2013 and World Health Assembly in 2017. This latest resolution marks the first time the ASDC has expressed support for the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances, and the passage of the resolution on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act is highly significant. MOFA again thanks the ASDC for its longstanding support and friendship for Taiwan. (E)
