Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Renal Failure in Belize

Project Description

 

The Capacity Building Project for the Prevention and Control of Chronic Renal Failure was initiated in 2016. According to statistics from the Belize government, the rates of diabetes mellitus and hypertension, potential factors in renal failure, are above 30 percent. The purpose of this project is to build capacity among health workers, promote health knowledge, establish a tracking and management system for chronic disease cases, and provide epidemiological reports.

 

 

The primary project goals are as follows:

  1. Strengthening capabilities in the field of public health and prevention of chronic diseases through educational campaigns. 
  2. Building up capacities in the field of professional care for chronic diseases.
  3. Establishing and launching a tracking and management system for chronic disease cases, including warning and follow-up functions, in at least one health institution at each level of the health care system.
  4. Providing statistical analysis reports in the field of epidemiology.

 

Project Period: 2016.02-2019.02

 

Project Objectives

 

  1. Strengthening capabilities in the field of public health and prevention of chronic diseases through educational campaigns:
  • Provision of educational lectures to at least 16,000 community members within three years.
  • Presentation at the Annual Medical and Dental Congress in the first two years and to the Council of Ministers of Health of Central America in the last year.
  1. Building up capacities in the field of professional care for chronic diseases:
  • Provision of a training program in general kidney disease diagnosis, therapy and dialysis for seven Belize medical personnel, including general practitioners and dialysis nurses, in Taiwan.
  • Provision of a local training program for at least 44 GPs, four case managers, two health information system technicians, and 250 community health workers.
  • Dispatch of Taiwan consultants specializing in the establishment of chronic renal failure prevention and control systems to Belize on a minimum of 17 occasions.
  • The establishment and launch of a tracking and management system for chronic disease cases, including warning and follow-up functions, in at least one health institution at each level of the health care system.
  • Provision of statistical analysis reports in the field of epidemiology.

 

Progress (Through the End of December 2017)

 

  1. Strengthening capabilities in the field of public health and prevention of chronic diseases through educational campaigns:
  • Completed community survey and collected 10,306 questionnaires, of which 7,978 cases received risk factor screening.
  1. Building up capacities in the field of professional care for chronic diseases:
  • Completed training of seven seed instructors comprising four doctors and three nurses.
  • Carried out advanced kidney disease care workshops for 17 physicians , basic kidney care workshops for 60 physicians and health education training for 13 dialysis nurses and 147 health promotion officials.
  • New Taipei City-based Far Eastern Memorial Hospital dispatched 11 consultants and completed an epidemiology survey mission as well as seed instructor supervision.
  1. Establishing and launching a tracking and management system for chronic disease cases, including warning and follow-up functions, in at least one health institution at each level of the health care system:
  • Confirmed new inquiries for the Belize Health Information System. The Belize Ministry of Health is continuing to work with Far Eastern Memorial Hospital to develop case management applications in BHIS.
  1. Providing statistical analysis reports in the field of epidemiology:
  • Completed a mid-term report (Chinese version).
